Many water softener filters use reverse osmosis. In a way, to me, it's sad that we Americans need to be so concerned about the safety of our tap water. I can remember when it was taken for granted that tap water was safe. (Though it's true that taste could vary.)

However, I realize that we now know more about how water and what's in it can affect our health for the better or worse. Even my mother, who's certainly no New Age, alternative health nut, has a filter on the faucet where she gets her drinking water.
