On personalized baby gifts

It's part of the amazing innovation, creativity and fragmentation and diversification of the markets that people can now buy personalized baby gifts. I don't know who came up with the idea to personalize things, but they must have made a lot of money. Seems to me that when I was a kid a million years ago, the only personalization for babies was buying stuff in either blue or pink depending on whether it was a boy or a girl. I think that offering people a variety of names did not fit into the mass marketing technology of that stage of the industrial era. It just would have cost too much. It wasn't then quite as bad as when Henry Ford say that people could have any color of Model T they wanted, so long as they wanted black, but it was still far from the individuation that we see now.
