One thing that can make a difference in how you and your house feels to other people, is outdoor lighting, because it can create a mood at night. If you have no lighting at all, your place is dark and dangerous. Some lighting is more friendly than others. Of course, safety should be your first concern. You want to make sure potential burglars are too intimidated to try to break into your home. You do this by signaling that they don't have any dark places in which to hide while breaking in.
