One of the stories in Space on My Hands by Fredric Brown assumes that someone has been able to make hypnosis so powerful with a machine that they can make large numbers of people believe almost anything. It starts out as a murder mystery on Callisto, but becomes far more than that. It does have some entertainment value in how the police detective is lead around, fooled and bewildered, but it's hard to really get into and believe. There's a government controlling the entire solar system that has cracked down on unorthodox political opinions, yet these books and reels are sold under the table.
